An Overview of WHO's EMF Project and the Health Effects of EMF Exposure
نویسنده
چکیده
The World Health Organization (WHO), through its International EMF Project, has conducted a number of reviews of possible health effects from exposure to fields from various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. These fields can be grouped into radiofrequencies (RF), intermediate frequencies (IF) and the static and extremely low frequencies (ELF). In addition, there have been substantial reviews published by other organizations, many of which WHO representatives have participated. This paper describes WHO's International EMF Project activities and their results so far, briefly reviews the biological effects from EMF exposure, identifies gaps in knowledge needing further research and overviews WHO's current published position on these issues. The main conclusion from the WHO reviews is that EMF exposures below the limits recommended in the guidelines by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) do not appear to have any known consequence on health. However, there are still some key gaps in knowledge needing further research before better health risk assessments can be made. These research needs are being promoted to funding agencies by WHO. Because of remaining uncertainties in the science database, there has been some pressure to introduce precautionary measures until gaps in knowledge are filled. If precautionary measures are introduced to reduce EMF levels, it is recommended that they are made voluntary, and that health-based exposure limits be mandated to protect public health.

متن کاملP-105: Prenatal Effects Exposure to Extremely Low Frequency- Electromagnetic Field (ELF-EMF) on Pathology of Testis in Newborn Rats
Background: Human beings are unavoidably exposed to ambient electromagnetic fields (EMF) generated from various electrical devices and from power transmission lines. The effects of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) on the biological functions of living organisms represent an emerging area of interest for human health. One of the critical issues is that EMF may adversely a...

Background: The effect of electromagnetic field (EMF) as an environmental factor on different organs including female reproductive system is of critical concern. In view of the fact that embryo fetuses and young, growing animals are more susceptible to any xenobiotic during gestational and lactation stages of gonadal development may it lead to permanent damage to the gonads. The early phases of...

Background:As the use of mobile phones is increasing, public concern about the harmful effects of radiation emitted by these devices is also growing. In addition, protection questions and biological effects are among growing concerns which have remained largely unanswered. Stem cells are useful models to assess the effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) on other cell lines. S...
متن کاملThe assessment of function, histopathological changes, and oxidative stress in liver tissue due to ionizing and non-ionizing radiations
Background: Compared to past decades, humans are exposed to rapidly increasing levels of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiations (RF-EMF). Despite numerous studies, the biological effects of human exposure to different levels of RF-EMF are not fully understood, yet. This study aimed to evaluate the bioeffects of exposure to "900/1800 MHz" and “2.4 GHz" RF-EMFs, and x-rays as well as their pot...
